ITV has commissioned a third series of the hit Sunday night drama Trigger Point.
The second series, which aired in January this year, had audiences gripped to their TV screens, averaging 8.1m viewers across the series. It has been streamed 30m times on ITVX and was the second most watched drama on ITV1 this year (Mr Bates vs The Post Office takes the number one slot).
Starring Vicky McClure in the lead role of bomb disposal operative or ‘expo’ Lana Washington, Trigger Point follows a team of bomb disposal officers (EXPOs) as they work to keep the capital safe from explosive devices and terrorist threats.
Alongside Vicky McClure, returning cast members for series three include Eric Shango (On The Edge), Nabil Elouahabi (Blue Lights, Unforgotten), Natalie Simpson (North Sea Connection) and Maanuv Thiara (DI Ray, Landscapers).
In this third series, explosives officer Lana Washington and her team are called to investigate a bomb threat that soon reveals itself to be the start of a sinister vendetta. Someone is targeting individuals, and demanding revenge. Working alongside the Police Counterterrorism Unit, the Bomb Disposal Squad race against time to find the bomber before they claim their next victim.
Produced by Jed Mercurio’s HTM Television, the lead writer for the third series is Chris Brandon (Bloodlands). It will be directed by Jamie Donoghue (Doctor Who, A Discovery of Witches) and Audrey Cooke (Trigger Point, DI Ray) and the series producer is Kristian Dench (Red Eye). Executive producers are Jed Mercurio (Line of Duty, Breathtaking) Daniel Walker (The Tourist, Boat Story), Jessica Sharkey (Breathtaking, Derry Girls), Chris Brandon and Vicky McClure.
Trigger Point was commissioned for ITV by Polly Hill, Head of Drama.
Polly Hill commented, “I am delighted that Trigger Point will be returning for a third series and Vicky McClure will be reprising her role as Lana Washington. The whole cast are amazing in this series and HTM are a great team to work with. There’s going to be lots more twists and turns and of course explosions in this third series, viewers are going to love it!”
Jed Mercurio commented, “Thank you to all the Trigger Point viewers who have made the series such a success. Thanks to our fantastic crew and brilliant cast led by the amazing Vicky McClure. We’re thrilled ITV, together with All3Media International, have commissioned a third season of twists, turns, bangs and blasts.”
Vicky McClure commented, “Trigger Point is back! We’re all so excited to get going. Having had such a positive response to the previous two series, we want to make the next series even more exciting, keep everyone on the edge of their seats whilst getting to know even more about the brilliant characters in the show. Lana is such a complex character to play, it’s a joy for an actor to play a role with as many layers as Lana.”
Trigger Point series 3 goes into production in London in 2025. The first and second series are available to watch on ITVX.
Trigger Point is produced in association with All3Media International, who distribute the series internationally.
