CJ ENM HONG KONG LTD update all its Mandarin premium scripted series: Mom, Don’t Do That, The Amazing Grace of Σ, Venus on Mars, Deep End and Hungry Souls: From Hell with Love with official poster, brand-new trailer and stills at Busan Content Market. A sneak preview for the five series was also shared via a trade video.
The highly-anticipated series, Mom, Don’t Do That! is set to premiere globally on 15 July (Friday), exclusively on Netflix and the official poster was shared today. A collaboration between CJ ENM HK with Taiwanese production company, Butt Mountain, this series was filmed entirely in Taiwan in 4K quality, taking a sensational novel into an 11-episodes series about a 60-year-old widow who dives into the world of online dating after her husband passes away, much to the concern of her two live-at-home daughters. Veteran performer Billy Wang stars in this zany comedy that takes its protagonist from Taiwan to Australia on her one-woman quest for love. Other notable casts include award-winning actors – Alyssa Chia and Alice Ko, Chris Wu and Austin Lin.
The official poster and trailer were also shared for The Amazing Grace of Σ (Sigma), a 12-episodes crime mystery thriller inspired by real events. The story follows a pop star whose manager dies by suicide and finds solace among a group of people known to his manager, only to become embroiled in a cult that manipulates vulnerable souls. The series is co-produced by Taiwan-based Rosebud Production Co. Ltd. and stars award-winning actors Yao Chun Yao, Aaron Yan (part of the popular Taiwanese Mandopop group Fahrenheit), Samantha Ko and Tanivu Yatauyungana. The series is written and directed by award-winning scriptwriter Luo-Ying Wu (Best Writing for a Television Series, Golden Bell Awards) who began researching for the show since 2019 with Ray Jiang (Best Director, Golden Bell Awards) and received positive review during the world premiere of its first two episodes at Series Mania and Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival last year. The Amazing Grace of Σ is set to premiere this summer.
CJ ENM HK’s trio of ongoing projects backed by the Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore (IMDA) under its Capability Partnership Programme, which aims to produce premium scripted series with Taiwanese, Singapore and regional talents for the global streaming audiences have also wrapped their productions. Some of these original IPs were shot in 4K and are now in post-production.
Venus on Mars, a 6-part high concept sci-fi, romantic comedy series by Singaporean director Chai Yee Wei was the first to conclude filming in Taiwan earlier this year featuring a bevvy of popular casts from Taiwan headed by Ivy Shao, Tsao Yu Ning and Wes Lo (former Boyband SpeXial member). The story revolves around an undergraduate student, Weina (played by Ivy Shao), together with her ex-boyfriend, Ben (played by Tsao Yu Ning) who are accidentally transported to a men-only parallel world ‘M-Earth’ where she is the only female. The series is currently in post-production and is slated for Q4 2022/ Q1 2023.
The second to conclude filming was Deep End, a five-part psychological thriller about online cyber-crime in Asia, a world where technology is both liberating and dangerous, a tool where information and images are manipulated, and a place where alarming ideologies are manifested. Both a sensational thriller and cautionary tale, the series highlights some of the most pressing issues related to online sex in Asia. The series stars Taiwanese actors James Wen, Vera Chen, Mimi Shao, Erek Lin, Singaporean actors Peter Yu, Glenn Yong and Aden Tan. The series is currently in post-production and is slated for the first half of 2023.
The last production to wrap is Eric Khoo’s Hungry Ghost Festival-set mini-series Hungry Souls: From Hell, With Love. The series was filmed over 23 days in Singapore and Batam, with the latter standing in for 1970s Singapore starring Taiwanese actors Christina Mok, Danny Lee Poh Siang and Rexen Cheng Jen-Shuo together with Singaporean actors Richard Low, Ayden Sng, Hayley Woo and Fang Rong. The five-part supernatural romance, which cuts back and forth between the past and present, tells the story of Bao, a chef with the ability to see spirits, who helps an amnesiac spirit Soo Lian reunite with her lover. The series is in post-production and is slated for the first half of 2023.
