TBS’ variety programme Fun with Kato-chan and Ken-chan has been announced to be included in “The World Information Tracking’s (Wit) Top 50 Series” – a list of 50 television series that have shaped the history of television around the world in the past 50 years, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of MIPTV this year.
The series has been added to the list under the year 1986. Wit selects only one series for each calendar year. Other series selected include Star Trek (1966), Columbo (1968), Sesame Street (1969), Friends (1994) and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (1998).
Japan is the only Asian country included on the list, trailing behind the U.S. and the U.K. Of the four Japanese TV series included on the list, Fun with Kato-chan and Ken-chan is the only live-action Japanese series, selected for its “everlasting and universal genre” of programmes, featuring viewer-submitted content.
