Japanese public broadcaster NHK and French public broadcaster France Télévisions have agreed to sign a co-production agreement to strengthen their collaboration on major offerings over the coming three years. The agreement is a renewal of a co-production/pre-buy agreement signed by NHK and France 5 in 2002. The two broadcasters have enjoyed a run of shared success. Joint projects initiated by NHK include Mammals vs. Dinosaurs (2006), a two-part series that shows how our ancestors’ struggle to survive led to the appearance of new mammals and shaped the ecosystem we know today, and Evolution of the Moon (2009), in which stunning HD images from the lunar probe Kaguya reveal unknown truths about our moon. Recent joint projects initiated by France Télévisions include Apocalypse (2010), which gives vivid global insight into war through colored images. NHK and France Télévisions plan to strengthen their collaboration through a wider-ranging partnership to include France 2, France 3, France 4, France 5, France Ô. Under the new deal, NHK and France Télévisions will join hands in the development and production of landmark series and one-off documentaries that will be coproduced or pre-bought by one party or the other. The productions will be focused in the genres of discovery; science and technology; history and archeology; and education. NHK and France Télévisions will agree the terms of collaboration on a program-by-program basis. They are already planning the co-production of China 2000 BC, a remarkable series about archaeological discoveries proving that China’s Xia Dynasty, which was long thought to be a myth, actually existed around 2000 BC. Another upcoming collaboration is the docudrama Volcano Devils, the tragic story of the famous French volcanologist couple who died from the eruption of Mount Unzen in Japan in 1991.
