BBC iPlayer, launched on Christmas day 2007, is now available on over 1000 devices across four screens – mobile, tablet, computer and TV. The apps have been downloaded over 28m times and in January 2014 there were 315 million requests – averaging over 10 million requests a day. The BBC announced, on March 6, plans, subject to the approval of the BBC Trust, to close BBC Three as a broadcast TV channel in autumn 2015. Tony Hall appointed as Director-General of the BBC
The BBC Trust has appointed Tony Hall – Lord Hall of Birkenhead – as the Director-General of the BBC, following the departure of George Entwistle. Lord Hall is currently Chief Executive of the Royal Opera House. He was Chairman of the board for the Cultural Olympiad and was head of BBC News and Current Affairs from 1996 to 2001.
