BBC Worldwide announced a new deal for an Israeli version of The Great Bake Off ahead of launching its new formats slate at MipTV 2015.
The Great Bake Off marks the first format deal between BBC Worldwide and Israel’s Keshet. The free-to-air broadcaster will produce 8 x 90’ episodes of the format, which will air in 2016.
The deal takes the total sales to 16 for The Great Bake Off, with BBC Worldwide licensing the highly successful format to Australia (Nine Network), Belgium (VTM), Denmark (DR), Finland (MTV3), France (M6), Germany (ProSiebenSat.1), Ireland (TV3), Italy (Discovery), The Netherlands (MAX), Norway (TV3), Poland (TLC), Sweden (TV7/Sjuan), Turkey (Acunmedya), Ukraine (1+1) and a Junior Bake Off in Thailand. Love Productions also licensed the format to the USA (CBS), making 17 international commissions of the BBC One hit show.
Local versions of The Great Bake Off are enjoying great success around Europe. In Norway the second series of Hele Norge Baker (All Norway Bakes) was in TV3’s top five highest rated titles in 2014 while Sweden’s Hela Sverige Bakar Series 3 (All Sweden Bakes) trebled Sjuan’s prime time average share. Over in Poland the second series of Polski Turniej Wypieków (The Great Polish Bake Off) outperformed TLC’s prime time average share by 166% and in Italy, Bake Off Italia Series 2 more than trebled Real Time’s prime time share.
Suzanne Kendrick, Acting Head of Format Sales, BBC Worldwide said, “I’m proud to be announcing another deal for The Great Bake Off, growing its success around the world. This year’s MipTV formats slate offers a real range of content – from competing under hypnosis in You’re Back in the Room, or testing artistic skill in The Big Painting Challenge, to discovering a family’s history through their treasures in Antique Detectives. There was real excitement from buyers at our formats day at BBC Worldwide Showcase in February and I’m very much looking forward to building on this in Cannes.”
A key title for MipTV is new comedy gameshow format You’re Back in The Room where five complete strangers take on a series of simple games, but in a unique twist, each of the contestants has been hypnotised.
International buyers will also have the opportunity to pick up a range of new imaginative formats from BBC Worldwide in Cannes. The Edge is the quiz/gameshow hybrid that requires brains and balls – answering quick fire questions and rolling the ball as close to the edge as possible, to bank the maximum amount of money without dropping out of the game. In The Big Painting Challenge amateur painters take on art challenges around the country’s most beautiful locations. Home cooks battle it out in Pressure Cooker as they choose random ingredients on the conveyor belt in front of them to create the winning meal, with the help of a celebrity chef. Designs on Chelsea sees budding garden designers compete to become the first amateur garden designer presenting at The Chelsea Flower Show. Seven Envelopes goes to the streets of one town and turns seven ordinary people into instant contestants who all have a chance to win a big cash prize. Antique Detectives join a family member on an emotional journey through their personal history as they investigate the history behind a family treasure to reveal lost secrets. Fast-paced drama Silk will be launched in scripted formats at MipTV. This hit series follows the rivalry, passion and intrigue of life on the front line of criminal law.
