Cannes – NHK was presented with the Green World Award at MIPTV’s opening day April 7, 2008 in Cannes. The kudos recognizes the Japanese pubcaster’s commitment to production and broadcast of programs on environmental themes which are also available through its Eco Archives. NHK has also organized ecological campaigns including exhibitions, workshops, concerts and seminars in June each year since 2003 to draw public attention to environmental issues. NHK has run a special ‘NHK Eco 2008’ campaign since January, and has lined up various TV programmes. The Arctic Circle (2 X 49’) to air May 2008 in Japan, will see the first part discuss changes in the Arctic eco-system including warming, and the second on the exploitation of oil and natural gas reserves and impact on the Arctic ecosystem. Save the Future is a 20-hour ‘green awareness’ tele-marathon of specially produced and regular programming on green themes. Round the World! The Great Global Eco Travelogue offers live broadcasts of two NHK presenters’ global eco-tours in each hemisphere across 30 countries. NHK Eco 2008 is a 10-minute weekly program introducing environmental topics for thought, featuring worldwide artists and showcases environmentally-friendly lifestyles. NHK’s in-house efforts include reducing electricity consumption by removing fluorescent light bulbs and turning off lights when unused, reducing air-conditioning loads and photo-copying paper consumption, as well as recycling VTR tapes. The pubcaster also announced its ‘Eco-Station Declaration’ on air in April to expand late night off-air hours for Educational TV and Radio 2 out of NHK’s eight channels, to use renewable energy sources when rebuilding local stations, to install solar-powered electricity generation systems for NHK’s broadcasting facilities nationwide, and to have its Tokyo headquarters reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 10% by 2012.
