Tokyo/Singapore/Hong Kong – MTV Networks Japan K.K, a unit of Viacom, have sealed a deal to provide MTV Networks Japan-owned international and Japanese content on niwango’s Nico Nico Douga (www.nicovideo.jp) online video sharing service. Nico Nico Douga allows comments to be input directly onto videos to be displayed when the videos are played. MTV Networks’ content is available within a specially created MTV channel under the official video content category, and includes classic animated comedy Beavis and Butthead, contemporary automobile customizing show MTV Pimp My Ride, and locally produced animated comedy series Usavich. The Nico Nico Douga MTV channel will feature 9 titles and 30 episodes at launch, with more to be added. Peter Bullard, president of MTV Networks Japan, commented, “Partnering with niwango’s Nico Nico Douga, Japan’s leading online video sharing service, will… make some of our most popular shows even easier to access. At the same time, we offer advertisers creative ways to reach our affluent and discerning audiences through carefully integrated packages.” The new service will also see niwango and MTV Networks Japan partnering to explore opportunities for the content business and digital distribution in particular. niwango has focused on protecting the rights of copyright holders and shares MTV Networks Japan’s aim to develop a new business model that leverages on original content.
