Manila – The Philippines’ National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has ordered Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) and its subsidiaries Smart Communications and MediaQuest Holdings to justify at a hearing scheduled this November, their continued offering of mobile TV service myTV, amidst opposition from cable operators. Some 300 cablers under the Philippine Cable Television Association (PCTA) umbrella had asked NTC to stop PLDT from offering myTV to its 25 million customers, claiming that the value-added service to mobile subscribers is anti-competitive and that it infringes on PCTA members’ broadcast permits. According to reports from the local media, PCTA President Allan Dungao said that the association took up the case as myTV uses DTTH (direct terrestrial television for handheld) bandwidth, which is “essentially digital broadcasting”. He cited that PLDT and its subsidiaries “did not have the franchise for that” and added that the rules to digital TV have not come available.
