Seoul – The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) is moving to develop a next generation handheld video game system. The state-run IT center is working with GamePark Holdings to upgrade the current Linux-based ‘GP2X Wiz’ game player, which was produced last year. The new version will be embedded with two and three-dimensional software, offering high-resolution gameplay. Gamers can download and share not only games via the internet, but also contents such as music and movies at faster rates as developers will use open-source applications to produce the upgraded system. The institute is working towards developing a homegrown game unit that outperforms the world-renowned Japanese devices, following President Lee Myung-bak’s remarks last February. President Lee asked policymakers why Korean companies cannot make portable game systems such as Nintendo, adding that they should be made to compete globally.
