Nippon TV, Japan’s leading multiplatform entertainment powerhouse, has announced that its massively popular variety show, “Monday Late Show” (Japanese title: “Getsuyo kara Yofukashi”, meaning “staying up late even on Monday night”), will be available for global catch-up streaming on Netflix starting May 21. This milestone marks only the second time a regular weekly entertainment show from Nippon TV will be distributed for catch-up streaming on Netflix, following the successful rollout of “Golden SixTONES”.
Now entering its 15th year on the air, “Monday Late Show” is a powerhouse of Japanese television, airing every Monday at 10:00 PM on Nippon TV. The wildly offbeat show is renowned for humorously dissecting public street interviews on trending, super-local topics, highlighting the charming and deeply human characters found in cities, towns, and villages across Japan. Leading the show are Shingo Murakami of the popular idol group SUPER EIGHT, a versatile host and personality with extensive experience on numerous variety programs, and the iconic, razor-witted TV personality Matsuko Deluxe. Their edgy and hilarious back-and-forth has become a signature of the show.
The show consistently dominates its time slot with the #1 audience share among the key 13-49 age demographic. It also sees success on national AVOD platforms where a single episode this year drew over 2.49 million views (TVer Data Marketing) featuring the wildly unique daily life of a legendary investor who lives entirely on shareholder perks, investigations into bizarre local mysteries from every corner of the country, and a showcase of the year’s most unforgettable street interviewees.
While a staple for domestic audiences, “Monday Late Show” has also cultivated a notable international following drawn to the show’s irreverent, wildly unconventional and unvarnished look at Japanese life and the hilarious bluntness of the hosts’ commentary. This move to global distribution comes in response to years of requests from overseas viewers seeking official access to the program.
Kensuke Sawada, Producer of “Monday Late Show”, Nippon TV, and Rie Sawaoka, Director of Content, Netflix made the announcement.
Kensuke Sawada, Producer of “Monday Late Show”, Nippon TV said, “The true charm of this show lies in how it delightfully shatters expectations of what Japanese people are like. We hope international audiences enjoy the experience.”
Rie Sawaoka, Director of Content, Netflix commented, “Monday Late Show is a truly one-of-a-kind program that captures the humor, spontaneity, and unpredictable charm of the people and stories it encounters across Japan. Its distinctive perspective and unforgettable personalities have made it a long-standing favorite among audiences in Japan.
We’re excited to partner with Nippon TV to introduce this uniquely Japanese iconic show to Netflix members around the world. We hope both longtime fans and first-time viewers alike will enjoy discovering the show’s sharp humor, originality, and unexpected moments.”
