Globo launches at MIPCOM 2017 the audience success series ‘Under Pressure’ – co-produced between Globo and Conspiração Filmes. The plot, which portrays in high voltages the dramas and conflicts in the daily lives of the medical staff working in a decaying hospital in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro, touched the hearts of Brazilian audiences and recorded an average daily reach of 40.2 million viewers during its broadcast in open TV, showing that it is possible to maintain adrenaline over nine episodes. The plot is now part of Globo’s series catalog and will be available in 4K.
Marked by extremely realistic dramas, characters and scenarios, ‘Under Pressure’ was a hit since its premiere in Brazil, totaling a whopping 44 million viewers. Five out of every 10 Brazilian households watching TV were tuned in to the series. The plot also reached impressive 42.3 million viewers and a share of 51% while airing the sixth episode, when the hospital medical staff had to deal with multiple victims of a car accident involving a van with over 20 passengers. ‘Under Pressure’ was also featured in the last edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, in Canada, where it was critically acclaimed.
The story is about the everyday life of doctors who must face the harsh reality of a chaotic environment and the struggle to keep patients alive. This high-tension environment is the backdrop of an unlikely relationship between the skeptic Dr. Evandro (Julio Andrade, ‘Above Justice’) and the religious and efficient Dr. Carolina (Marjorie Estiano, ‘Dangerous Liaisons’). The two are not only work partners, but also share a passion for saving lives, constantly juggling the hardships of work and their own personal conflicts, in order to cope with the extreme pressure of their daily lives.
Intensity is part of the innovative production, with scenes shot in deactivated areas of a public hospital, affording realism to each story told. In addition, real cases researched by a team of screenwriters in the public health system of the city of Rio de Janeiro were the inspiration to such amazing story lines, touching upon extremely relevant social issues, such as substance abuse, suicide, AIDS, and abandonment.
Featuring Andrucha Waddington and Mini Kerti as directors, ‘Under Pressure’ is a spin-off of the Andrucha Waddington feature film with the same name, co-produced by Conspiração Filmes and Globo. Created by Luiz Noronha, Claudio Torres and Renato Fagundes based on an original idea by Mini Kerti, the series is loosely inspired by the book “Sob Pressão – A rotina de guerra de um médico brasileiro” [Under Pressure – A Brazilian doctor’s war routine], by Marcio Maranhão. The series is sign by Jorge Furtado, who writes de episodes with Lucas Paraizo, Antonio Prata and Márcio Alemão, with medical consulting by Marcio Maranhão.
