Globo’s Brazilian version of ‘Supermax’ was nominated at the Seoul International Drama Awards, which awards the best international productions for television. Created by José Alvarenga Jr., Marçal Aquino and Fernando Bonassi, the series is running for “best series” and “best director” (José Alvarenga Jr., ‘The Hunter’). The award ceremony will be held at the South Korean capital in September.
This is the third time that one of Globo’s productions is nominated at the Seoul International Drama Awards. The telenovela ‘Little Missy’ was a finalist in 2007 and ‘Passione’ took the Silver Trophy in 2011. That same year, one of the telenovela’s leading roles, Tony Ramos, was nominated for “Best Actor”.
‘Supermax’ aired between September and December 2016 in Brazil, telling the story of 12 reality show contestants confined to a prison in the Amazon rainforest. The contestants are taken to the limit when they lose contact with the show’s crew and strange things start to happen. A mix of suspense, drama and psychological horror, the series’ star-studded cast also features actresses Mariana Ximenes (‘Precious Pearl’) and Cléo Pires (‘Destiny River’). The plot gave birth to the international version of ‘Supermax’, Globo’s first original production exclusively for the Latin American market and shot completely in Spanish. The international version was co-produced between Oficina Burman, Mediaset (Spain), Azteca (Mexico), TVP (Argentina) and a strategic partnership with Teledoce (Uruguay).
In addition to the Seoul International Drama Awards, ‘Supermax’ also received international recognition at the 37th Fantasporto – Porto International Film Festival, in Portugal, where it was aired. Its participation at the event consolidated Globo’s long-standing expertise as a major producer of multiplatform content, developing different drama formats that leverage its creation, production and distribution structure, ultimately expanding its coverage in both the domestic and foreign markets.
The Brazilian network has been attending renowned film and audiovisual productions festivals around the world, such as the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, when the ‘Under Pressure’ series will be aired; the recent MIPDrama Screenings, in France, where the series ‘Jailers’ was awarded; in addition to Globo’s participation at Berlinale 2017, in Germany, featuring the series ‘The Wise Ones’ and the international version of ‘Supermax’; the 20th International Film Festival of Punta del Este, in Uruguay, and the 8th edition of the Series Mania, in France, where the international version of ‘Supermax’ was also aired.
