The series selected for the second edition of the MIPDrama Screenings event were announced, and Globo’s previously unreleased Jailers is the only Latin American production among the 12 chosen for an exclusive showing at the event, to be held on April 2. Organized by MIPTV, one of the main television content markets, the MIPDrama Screenings show major new releases from networks and producers from around the world to an audience of licensing executives and journalists. Globo’s presence among the selected networks attests to the potential and relevance of the Brazilian company as a producer and distributor of multiplatform content on a global scale.
Some of the selection criteria of the MIPDrama Screenings include plot innovations, production quality and the narrative’s ability to make an impression on audiences in different countries. In addition, the series must be previously unreleased or have not been aired before January 2017. The series are evaluated by a jury composed of market executives and MIPTV organisers.
Jailers addresses the dilemmas and conflicts experienced by prison staff in Brazil. Inspired by the book of the same name by Drauzio Varela, the plot tells the story of Adriano, a jailer who struggles with the difficulties of life in prison – both the lives of inmates and his own life. Upstanding and averse to violence, Adriano’s greatest weapon is the spoken word. He relies on it to maintain as much peace-of-mind as he can at work, while the dilemmas back home take on unexpected proportions, even to someone used to handling extreme situations. Adriano struggles with the demands of his wife Janaína to have a child, and his daughter Livia entering puberty, all while following in the footsteps of his father Tibério at work. Facing ethical and moral dilemmas on a daily basis, the jailer lives between walls and bars, confronted with weapons, threats and conflicts – mainly of a human and psychological nature. Under direction of Guel Arraes, head of Globo’s serial dramaturgy, Jailers features José Eduardo Belmonte as its main director, written by Marçal Aquino, Fernando Bonassi and Dennison Ramalho in collaboration with Marcelo Starobinas, and co-produced by the brazilian independent producer Gullane Films.
The selection of Jailers to feature at the MIPDrama Screenings strengthens Globo’s position as a major player in the series market as well, offering broad content and high quality productions that win over audiences across the five continents. In addition to MIPDrama Screenings, the Brazilian network has already screened its series at other renowned film festivals around the world, such as the Berlinale 2017 (Germany), the 20th International Film Festival of Punta del Este (Uruguay), and the 37th International Film Festival of Porto (Fantasporto), in Portugal.
