Asia, Africa – Following the death of the renowned South African activist, humanitarian former President Nelson Mandela, A+E Networks, Discovery Communications and VIMN began disrupting regular programming on respective major channels to air tribute programs in a show of respect.
A+E Networks honours the legacy of the late Nelson Mandela through a commemorative 2-hour History Channel special entitled Miracle Rising: South Africa which tells the story of South Africa’s political transformation after the first black president Nelson Mandela came into power after his release from prison in 1990.
Discovery Communications’ Discovery Channel Southeast Asia will be airing THE MAKING OF MANDELA special documenting Mandela’s life and his commitment to human rights from the 1960’s, which includes images and recordings of the late Mandela as well as interviews with his close friends, and associates, such as former South African President Frederik Willem de Klerk.
Within a few hours of the announcement of Mandela’s death, VIMN Africa ceased every commercial advertisement and replaced on-screen logos with that of tribute logos on their channels for 24 hours in respect. Tribute programme MTV’s Meeting Mandela: A Staying Alive Special– a show hosted by Beyonce, will be aired in place of VIMN channels’ regular line-ups.
MTV’s Meeting Mandela: A Staying Alive Special will air their repeat on MTV in Asia on December 11, 2013. The program is also available online on “MTV Voices” – a pro-social media website where audiences can also post their own personal tributes, photos and memories of the felled former President.
A+E Network’s H2 Southeast Asia will air their last scheduled telecast oh Miracle Rising: South Africa on December 10, 2013, while Discovery Communication’s Discovery Channel Southeast Asia will air THE MAKING OF MANDELA special on December 14 and 15, 2013.
Mandela, a revered icon of the anti-apartheid crusade in South Africa died on Thursday at the age of 95. His funeral will be held on December 14, 2013.
