Orbi, a new visitor attraction created by SEGA and BBC Earth was officially opened to the public in Japan by Naoya Tsurumi, COO & President SEGA Corporation and Amanda Hill, Chief Brands Officer for BBC Worldwide.
Orbi is a multi-sensory attraction, allowing visitors to explore with sight, smell, touch and sound. Twelve different nature zones create experiences that would be impossible in the real world – such as being at the centre of a stampede and experiencing the thunder and roar of 1.3 million wildebeest rushing past.
At the Main Theatre, bespoke nature films created by BBC Earth Productions play on one of Japan’s largest screens. Spanning 40 metres across and eight metres high, the Main Theatre screen is curved to surround the audience with nature. A 22 point sound system and 3D soundscapes add to the experience, together with scent technology, wind, fog, strobe lighting and vibrations.
Speaking at the opening Amanda Hill, Chief Brands Officer for BBC Worldwide commented: “When we set out to create Orbi we challenged ourselves to bring people a nature experience beyond what would be possible in the real world, inspiring visitors to forge a deeper connection with the natural world. Orbi is a thrilling culmination of BBC Earth’s partnership with SEGA, it really is nature supercharged.”
Mr Tsurumi, President and COO of SEGA Corporation added: “Orbi goes beyond generations and cultures, it’s wonderful to see people of every age group interacting with the different nature zones today and enjoying this extraordinary nature experience in the heart of the city.”
