Singapore – Junkie Monastery, a documentary co-produced by AETN All Asia Networks and The Moving Visuals Co., won the award for Best
Social Awareness at the Asian Television Awards (ATA) 2012 held December 6 at the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore. The competition is
judged by an expert panel of 48 judges from across the region. Junkie Monastery was also “Highly Commended” in three
other categories; “Best Infotainment Programme”, “Best Direction” and “Best Editing”.
In June 2012, Junkie Monastery was honoured with the Best Lifestyle & Information Program award at the Banff World Media Festival (BWMF) 2012.
The 60 minute documentary takes a look at the controversial journey of heroin addict, Aftab Qayum from the UK into the “World’s Toughest Rehab” – Thamkrabok Monastery in Thailand. It is a real-life account with behind-the-scenes footage on the unusual drug rehabilitation program undertaken by addicts and overseen by the Thai Buddhist Monks.
“Although it’s essentially a story about addiction, Junkie Monastery takes us inside one of the most visually engaging forms of rehabilitation you’ll ever come across,” said Chris Humphrey, Executive Producer of AETN All Asia Networks.
“It was one of the hardest-hitting documentaries we have ever done and we are proud to receive multiple accolades, including this most recent win, Best Social Awareness Programme,” said Galen Yeo, Producer, at The Moving Visuals Co.
