Q: In the past year, which types of formats have done well and are seeing increased interest in Asia?
A: Traditionally, game shows. However, recently clients have been interested more and more by factual entertainment and reality, which is great because a lot of our leading producers such as Lion TV and Objective Productions are making great factual entertainment.
Q: Which territories in particular have seen strong growth?
A: Korea has seen a strong growth recently for us as well as Vietnam.
Q: Buyers are increasingly looking at content with cross-platform potential. How high does such content rank on your company’s catalogue at MIPCOM?
A: ALL3MEDIA International has a dedicated department for Interactive and Ancillary and this side of the business is growing significantly and for all our new formats we offer to our client the possibility of development across various platforms, such as 8 Weeks to Happiness, The Cube, Are You Normal?, so it is of major importance to us. A key example of this is the creation of the brand new format Have You Got The Balls?, which was pilot-developed by an interactive fund and will have its premier commission in Vietnam.
Q: How do you address challenges when adapting your formats for Asia?
A: We have a strong catalogue of factual entertainment, which, for cultural reasons, sometimes need to be adapted to the local markets. Therefore, the collaboration between our original production team and the local team in Asia tends to be more important than in some other regions of the world.
Q: What can you say about formats out of Asia?
A: Certain countries have been exporting very successful formats, such as Korea for example. I recently attended the 2012 Korea TV content showcase in London, which proved to be very interesting. I can definitely see potential for Korean creativity to be exported.
Q: What would you say are the key strengths of your company’s formats?
A: We have a very diverse catalogue including game shows, reality, factual entertainment and scripted series. We have the experience in adapting our formats all around the world to meet a variety of budgets. I believe our clients appreciate our flexibility and creativity in meeting their needs.
Q: What key titles are you pushing at MIPCOM this year?
A: Are You Normal? is a fun, new, primetime entertainment format that can be adapted and produced easily to suit local requirements. Also, Money From Strangers, 8 Weeks to Happiness, The Gadget Show and constructed reality formats Day And Night, Families At The Crossroad and Cases Of Doubt—from our producer Filmpool in Germany. This has been one of our most successful genres in the past months across Europe. I have seen strong interest for this in Asia, and I am going to pursue this in the coming months.
Q: Any pre-MIPCOM deals you can announce?
A: Cash Cab – Vietnam and Have You Got The Balls will be launching on Hanoi TV in Vietnam this autumn. There is some production development for The Cube in various territories in Southeast Asia. Also, there have been several developments in India for our game shows and reality formats, while several deals are in place in China, which we will be able to announce soon.
