What a year it has been; full on from “go” and we’ve not even reached the “whoa” yet. Be it docos, kids TV, news, drama, animation, formats or sport, Asia has both devoured it and produced it – adding its own seasonal ingredients into the mix.
Retaining this momentum in the coming year is a definite reality but challenges still abound. For PayTV; technology is not only giving consumers more ways to watch content, it’s also allowing new players – with lower overheads – to throw their hat into the ring. Free-to-Air is not down for the count, MediaCorp for one is launching a premium service in the New Year, and new web offerings plus the continued ease of illegal downloading, means the goal post is continually shifting. Mature markets are also not an easy fix and merely throwing in more channels or HD feeds will not solve the issue of a plateauing market place.
Additionally, censorship remains a bugbear. Although consumers are asking for racier and more hard-hitting content, the rules governing what and how content should be seen is still to catch up with the times in a number of territories; again, affecting growth, diversity and choice. But who ever said this industry was easy?
On behalf of the team, I want to thank all our contacts, contributors, channel heads and content makers for your support and making this year in television such an exciting one. As always, the year end brings a season of change, with new goals to pursue and ideas to ignite. Change is in the air also at TV ASIA Plus and more details of this will follow soon.
Till then; revel in a job well done, plan for next year’s hurdles and see you in your finest at the Asian TV Awards.
Merry Christmas and Happy 2012!
