Singapore – MediaCorp will broadcast the Beijing Olympics in high-definition on a full HD Olympics channel (HD5) that will broadcast up to 19 hours of action daily. During the games, Channel 5 will also carry an average of 18 hours of Olympics broadcast daily. DVB-T (out-of-home channel) TV Mobile will carry 13.5 hours of Olympics action daily, while Chinese-language Channel U will carry between 4 to 15.5 hours of Olympics coverage daily. Says MediaCorp CEO Lucas Chow,”We have really upped the ante this Olympics; not only have we doubled the hours of telecast from the previous Olympics, we are also making history with the first-ever True HD broadcast of a major sporting event on HD5, which will become a dedicated Olympics channel come 8 August.” Meanwhile StarHub will offer Beijing 2008 Olympic Games coverage across six dedicated cable TV channels – OLYMPICS 1 to 6, and HD coverage via MediaCorp’s HD5, available at no extra cost from 28 July 2008 to all cable TV customers with an HD-ready TV set and StarHub’s HD set-top box. StarHub will also make available for free, a’live’ stream of each of the six Olympic TV channels on its mobile platform to all StarHub Mobile post-paid customers with any 3G or 3.5G (HSPA-capable) handset. Customers may access these six channels via the MobileTV Xtra site on StarHub’s Gee! portal from 6 August 2008. StarHub will also introduce a new mobile TV client application that will be available for download on selected handsets from 6 August 2008 to enhance the viewing experience for customers accessing Olympic channels on their mobile phones.
