New Zealand – NHNZ will film the first scientific investigation of an adult colossal squid by New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa, for a Discovery Channel documentary to be released worldwide late 2008 to support the Te Papa colossal squid preservation program. Discovery Channel is also supporting the research project. The documentary will cover the scientists’ examination of the anatomy of the 495kg, 6 – 8m long specimen of colossal squid where measurements are taken, the stomach and its contents removed, beak and mouth-parts examined, and the sex determined. Tissue samples will also be taken for DNA analysis. The squid was caught in the Ross Sea and gifted to Te Papa in February 2007 by the Ministry of Fisheries. In addition to the research, the documentary will also feature the challenges the assignment poses to the team of scientists, as well as their solutions to their goals. Following the examination, the specimen will be fixed in a formalin solution and will be displayed at Te Papa later this year.
