Nonthaburi, Thailand – Shin Satellite has signed two five-year contracts worth US$5million with Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) to provide additional bandwidth capacity on the Thaicom 4 (IPSTAR) broadband satellite and Thaicom 5 satellite. Under the agreement, MPT will expand bandwidth capacity on Thaicom 4 (IPSTAR) bandwidth and C-band transponder on Thaicom 5 satellite for its domestic and international telecommunications trunking network and IPSTAR broadband satellite service in Myanmar. MPT has been Shin Satellite’s customer since 1998, and has served as IPSTAR’s National Service Operator (NSO) since 2005 to deploy IPSTAR broadband satellite services throughout Myanmar, with 2,500 user terminals already provided. MPT and IPSTAR have also jointly appointed five service providers including GlobalNet, MMG Technologies, Myanmar World Distribution, NetStar and MaxiNet to provide retail IPSTAR services in Myanmar. The expansion of IPSTAR bandwidth is expected to enhance MPT’s broadband satellite services nationwide, especially for Voice-over-IP (VoIP) applications.
