Mumbai – Indian media and entertainment group Sahara One launched the Firangi channel on February 25, 2008. Firangi is positioned to showcase international television programming in Hindi in what is touted as a newly-created category of programming, World Television. Firangi channel offers the entire spectrum of entertainment programming sourced from across the world and dubbed in Hindi. This includes telenovelas, sitcoms, adventure shows and international films. Among the shows airing is Globo TV International’s telenovela America, which premiered on the channel’s launch, and marks the first time that Globo TV International’s content airs in India. America is part of a four-year volume deal inked by Globo TV International and Sahara One to broadcast over 1,000 hours of the former’s dramas. Also available are Dori Media’s Argentinean telenovela Lalola, Telemundo’s Columbian telenovela Second Chance, and France-based Marathon’s mini-series Dolmen. The channel features two prime time bands, one from 5-8pm targeting housewives and another from 9pm to midnight for others. Telenovelas including Lalola, America and Second Chance runs for an hour within the two time bands daily. Rajeev Chakraharti, business head, Firangi said, “Our consumer research reiterates our belief that audiences also seek nouvelle entertainment options that are being enjoyed across the world. Firangi aims to fill in the gap and offer viewers a distinct alternate from the current content on Indian television.”
