Taipei – Taiwan’s National Communications Commission announced Oct. 31 a decision has not been reached on when and how operating licenses are to be issued to mobile TV operators. While local media has speculated that licenses will be issued by June 2008, a spokesperson from the Commission indicated it’s “still too early to say”. The announcement was made during the Commission’s review of applications from mobile service providers to extend mobile TV trial periods, currently limited to six months, with one extension allowed per operator. Operators conducting trials include Public Television Service (PTS), Chinese Television System (CTS), Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, China Television Co (CTC) and Chunghwa United Telecom Group. While all five operators have asked to extend their trials, the Commission has approved only PTS’ request and is assessing the remaining operators’ performance during their trial operations to decide if extensions are to be granted.
