Seoul – Samsung Electronics and KT, South Korea’s dominant fixed-line operator, have set up a partnership to propel IPTV sales amid increasing demand for such services in one of the world’s most Internet savvy countries. According to The Korea Times, the partnership will see Samsung offer 42-inch plasma display panels (PDP) and 40-inch liquid crystal display (LCD) “Bordeaux” TVs at specially discounted prices to new subscribers to the Mega TV service. Officials from Samsung and KT are reported as saying that joint marketing will give consumers a chance to experience the latest service with higher quality viewing. Mega TV offers programming from all terrestrial TV operators – KBS, MBC and SBS – across many genres including movies, sports, culture, animation, drama and educational programming. KT says the July 2007-launched Mega TV video-on-demand (VOD) service has grown steadily, securing 148,000 subscribers at the end of September. A KT official said the company is confident of attracting one million subscribers by 2008. High-speed Internet subscribers rose by 3% to 6.52 million in the third quarter from 6.33 million a year earlier.
