Taiwan’s terrestrial stations may still feature in the top 10 TV shows in a given period, but cable continues to dominate as the mainstream medium, accounting for around 75% of total TV viewed in the territory. According to figures provided by media strategists Mediaedge: cia (MEC), extracted from AC Nielsen Telescope, the cable TV ratings share rose to 80% in the first quarter of 2007. Most recent statistics show cable take an average rating of 8.49 versus terrestrial’s 2.65 in May ’07; in June ’07 cable took 9.06 to terrestrial’s average rating of 2.36; and cable took an average rating of 8.98 to terrestrial’s 2.26 in July ’07. “Cable rating performance keeps increasing,” says MEC Taiwan’s Managing Director Vince Cheng. “Cable ratings even exceed terrestrial, not just on average, but in prime time as well – for example with soap operas and news programming.”
