MediaCorp to launch commercial HD channel by Q4
Singapore– Terrestrial broadcaster MediaCorp will launch HDTV commercial channel HD5 in Q4 2007 and plans to offer all its channels in HD by 2012. HD5 is a simulcast of English-language Channel 5 with programmes enhanced for display on HD-ready TV sets. South Korea leads the world in the popularity of social networking, with 55% of adult Internet users having visited at least one site, according to Ipsos Insight. Three out of every 10 Koreans belong to Cyworld, which markets itself as the Ultimate Place for Trusted Friendships and Creative Self-Expression. Broadband roll-out pace slowing in China
The rate of broadband growth in China is slowing dramatically, creating a digital divide between city and rural areas, and challenging operators to find new sources of revenue growth, Ovum reports. Although Ovum still expects China to surpass the US in total broadband subscribers in 2008, that leaves a large proportion of the market untapped. It estimates there are 52.9 million broadband subscribers in China, a household penetration rate of 15.1%. Growth of broadband subscribers outpaces infrastructure investment
Broadband penetration is growing in the Asia Pacific but investment in equipment to enable consumers to access broadband is lagging, according to a new survey by market researcher Ovum RHK. Ovum predicts there will be 196 million broadband subscribers in the region by the end of 2010, up from 127 million this year, a gain of 15%. By 2010, it forecasts there will be 118.5 million subs connected via DSL, 52.3 million via FTTB/FTTH, 18.5 million cable, and 6.7 million wireless.
