Tokyo – One of Universal Networks International’s five core channel brands has launched for the first time in Japan on 1 April 2010 on multiple cable, DTH and IPTV platforms. The announcement was made by Christopher Williams, managing director, Japan, Universal Networks International. Universal Channel will also be available in high definition in Japan on SkyPerfect and KCAT. The HD Universal Channel will be the first in the world to be launched, reaffirming Universal Networks International’s focus on Asia as part of the Network’s international growth strategy, which aims for HD growth in most territories in the next 18 months. Universal Channel in Japan will broadcast a mix of drama and comedy alongside movie blockbusters, bringing imagination-based programming to Japanese viewers. SCI FI – an imagination-based brand that reaches over 2.6 million Japanese households – will occupy a programming block on Universal Channel. As part of Universal Channel’s launch into Japan, the channel has collaborated with popular singer/artist from Universal Music – BENI, who will serve as Universal Channel’s spokesperson. BENI will be seen in specially created vignettes for the next six months on Universal Channel.
