Macau – Macau Cable TV must take a more active role in solving the conflict with public antenna companies, notes Lawrence Tou Veng Keong, director of the Telecommunications Regulation Bureau (DSRT). According to Tou, Cable TV have only given “a preliminary response” to the latest proposal, pointing out “many legal problems”, reports The Macau Daily Times. Tou had in April disclosed that the six public antenna companies have agreed to stop broadcasting Celestial Movies and Thailand’s ‘TrueSport’ 1, 2 and 3 channels starting April 19. A consensus has been reached between the bureau and the public antenna industry, Tou said, adding the SAR government welcomes the industry’s decision and deems that it will pose “positive effects”. The director also said that the DSRT will continue negotiations with the public antenna companies in the future in order to gradually remove other channels that are involved in copyright issues accused by Macau Cable TV. Yet, he said the bureau did not yet receive a response from Cable TV concerning the public antenna companies’ proposal. The SAR government, the DSRT director added, will maintain conversations with Cable TV in a hope to solve the conflict between Cable TV and public antenna companies as soon as possible. The judicial struggle between Cable TV and the public antenna companies has been ongoing for over a decade. In 1999 Cable TV received the only concession for paid television service but the public antenna industry has been operating for much longer without any license. The operator has already filed several lawsuits for infringement of copyright.
