Kuala Lumpur – Dr. Ali R. Ebadi, MEASAT, has been re-elected as a member of the International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) Radio Regulations Board (RRB) at the 18th ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2010 (PP-10), in Guadalajara, Mexico. The election results were unveiled on 11 October with Dr. Ali as one of the three members elected for Region E (Asia and Australasia). Dr. Ali has previously been elected to the RRB in 2006, serving as RRB Vice Chairman in 2008 and RRB Chairman in 2009. “I am extremely happy and honoured to be re-elected as a member to the RRB for another term,” said Dr. Ali. “I would like to extend my gratitude to the Malaysian government for nominating me as a candidate to the RRB for my 2nd term. Also, without the help of the Minister of Information, Communications and Culture, YB Dato’ Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim, his Ministry, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, I would not have achieved this victory,” he added. Malaysia was also re-elected to the ITU Council for the fourth consecutive term as an ITU Council member. There were 65 candidate countries eyeing for the 48 seats on the Council. Malaysia came out fourth in the 13-seat Region E for the 2011–2014 term. The RRB is an international panel of experts under the ITU who convene to oversee the application of the world’s Radio Regulations, a set of internationally agreed guidelines for the use of the radio spectrum across the world. The RRB is made up of only 12 members from the 191 Member States of the ITU representing the world’s five ITU regions (Americas, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia and Australasia).
