Al Jazeera has launched a new citizen media sharing service.
The network’s existing portal launched in 2008 at the start of the Arab uprisings. The new Sharek (Arabic for “share”) portal will operate a system of accreditation, which will distinguish reliable and regular submitters of content. Once users reach a trust score threshold, their videos will be viewable pre-moderation as opposed to the default post-moderation.
The new portal will also be multilingual, allowing visitors to navigate content in English, Arabic, Serbo-Croat, Turkish and Swahili. The website will launch in the third quarter and the network is currently seeking feedback on what features users would like to see.
Al Jazeera’s head of new media, Moeed Ahmad, said: “Al Jazeera is committed to fostering a culture of citizen reporting in communities across the region and worldwide. That is why visitors to Sharek are able to watch footage that doesn’t necessarily make it onto our screens. It’s also why we’re training would-be journalists from communities in the Middle East and Africa.”
