Olympic broadcast controversy in Hong Kong continues

July 11, 2012 by TVA Editor

It remains to be seen if Hong Kong’s free-to-air channels will be screening the London2012 Olympic Games, following a report that was sent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Headquarters in Switzerland.

According to The Standard, the decision will be made in a few days. Prior to this, local representatives of the IOC met with i-Cable executives to push for a deal for coverage on other channels, which would be in line with an understanding about including free-to-air channels when i-Cable won local broadcasting rights for the Olympics several years ago with a US$16 million (HK$124.8 million) bid.

“It is said one of the options suggested by the committee is to give free-to-air stations TVB and ATV “unconditional” broadcasting rights,” reported The Standard. A TVB spokesman said the broadcaster expects “the whole situation will become clearer in the coming two to three days,” adding that TVB has informed i-Cable that it is “willing to pay a reasonable price for the rights.”
