The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) has been inducted by the ITU-T as a sector member.
ITU-T is one of the three sectors of the International Telecommunication Union and focuses on development of telecommunication standards (telephony, mobile, IPTV, etc). ITU-T is also active in other areas such as ICTs, broadband connectivity and audio visual media accessibility.
ABU is already an active member of the Radiocommunication and Development sectors of the ITU.
The Union is also now a member of the Future of Broadcast Television (FOBTV) Initiative. The FOBTV Initiative was set up earlier this year with membership from broadcasting unions, broadcasters, standards setting bodies and other industry players.
FOBTV stresses the unique attributes of terrestrial broadcasting as a flexible and efficient means of wireless media delivery. Its participants want to facilitate the evolution of broadcasting technology to ensure its long-term viability and relevance.
