LOS ANGELES – The upcoming 2013 NATPE Market and Conference, to be held January 28 – 30 at the Fontainebleau Resort in Miami, marks its 50th anniversary this year. The conference will have a forward-looking agenda built around the theme of moving “Beyond Disruption”. NATPE President and CEO Rod Perth has also confirmed that the number of exhibitors are pacing ahead of last year, reaching 300 exhibitors, 27 of which are first timers at NATPE. The Market Floor is believed to be completely sold out.
In celebration of its milestone anniversary, NATPE has also planned special networking events and parties such as NATPE’s Official 50th Anniversary Birthday Party which will be held on Tuesday, January 29 at LIV nightclub at the Fontainebleau.
Over the past half century, NATPE has transitioned from a domestic syndication programme selling forum into a global, multi-platform content market and conference. In that time, it has played an integral role in the success of some of the greatest and longest-running shows in television history. This year’s NATPE theme, “Beyond Disruption”, describes how content, advertising and technology are now interdependent ecosystems that are encouraging reinvention of tomorrow’s business models.
NATPE will explore the “Beyond Disruption” theme in a new conference format encompassing panel discussions, thoughtprovoking one-on-one conversations and individual 20-minute presentations that take a close look at disruption and, more importantly, what comes next.
Notable speakers include NATPE’s official key note speaker Mark Cuban, Chairman, AXS TV; Benjamin Silverman and Chris Grant of Electus; Showrumer Glenn Mazzara (who had recently left The Walking Dead); Mike Beale and Maria Kyriacou of ITV Studios Global Entertainment. Kevin Beggs of Lionsgate Television Group will speak on on the topic “Will Disruption Choke Television Business Models?”, and host Larry King will present on the topic “Media Evolution or Revolution?”
In addition, Perth has announced that NATPE’s 10th Annual Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award honourees will include Steve Levitan, creator of ABC’s hit comedy series Modern Family; John Langley, the “Godfather of Reality Television” as creator/executive producer of COPS; and Debra Lee, CEO of BET, the leading TV network aimed at African- American audiences.
PARIS – MIPTV, the annual international market and creative forum for content organised by Reed MIDEM, also celebrates its 50th anniversary. The forum will be held in Cannes, from April 8 – 11, 2013 where the forum will be celebrating the great moments in TV and the people who have innovated through a series of memorable events.
Sophie Turner Laing, Managing Director for Entertainment, News and Broadcast Services, BSkyB, is set to open the MIPTV 2013 Media Mastermind keynote line-up.
“Great content sits at the very heart of any successful entertainment business and MIPTV remains the world’s most important showcase for that content. I look forward to joining the best in the industry to debate what makes us all tick,” added Laing.
“We’re delighted to welcome Sophie Turner Laing, a major industry-leading personality, as the first keynote speaker at the 50th anniversary of MIPTV, especially since she celebrates her 30th MIPTV attendance this year,” said Laurine Garaude, Director of Reed MIDEM’s Television Division.

The 4th annual MIPFormats International Pitch competition event is also part of the programme line up for MIPTV 2013 and will take place in the Palais des Festival’s Grand Auditorium on April 7, 2013. MIPFormats is a pitching competition for companies with innovative concepts for new, non-scripted entertainment formats. The call for entries is currently open and interested applicants can submit their project until February 4, 2013.
Under the terms of the MIPFormats partnership that was renewed by Reed and Warner Bros. in mid-December 2012, Warner Bros. will spend up to €25,000 to develop the winning project as a television project. Canada’s Antica Productions won the MIPFormats Pitch last year with its dating series project, Looking 4 Love.
