Tokyo – NHK will commence a new Hybridcast service on September 2, 2013, featuring collaborative operations between broadcasting and communications. The NHK Hybridcast service combines programmes broadcast over the airwaves with broadband data to provide a variety of services to viewers owning a Hybridcast service-enabled TV.
As a first phase in the service, Hybridcast Home Screen will be introduced in September, enabling the display of breaking news, weather forecasts, sports information, exchange rates and more. Services offering viewers additional information relating to the programme being aired and pay-per-view/on-demand videos are scheduled to commence after autumn.
Moreover, collaboration between TV and tablet terminals is also under consideration. Viewers will be able to answer quiz questions via smart phone while watching TV and see the answers on the TV and smart phone screens.
The system will display internet information equal in quality to conventional broadcasting, and with an even greater range of colours. Animations and other expressive functions can be used as well.
