Seoul, Korea – Asia’s leading content and media company CJ E&M’s new TV series Chicago Typewriter has launched an impressive take off in Korea. Merely three days after its premiere, the drama ranked first among cable channel programmes in the same time slot, also ranking first among female/male adults in their 20s to 40s.
Even before its first air, Chicago Typewriter accrued much interest by having the three requisites for a successful drama: star cast, acclaimed producer, and script writer. The drama feature star actors Yoo Ah-in from the film Veteran and Lim Soo-Jeong who is back on the TV screen for the first time in 13 years. Together with award winning script writer Jin Soo-wan, writer of Moon Embracing the Sun, and renowned producer Kim Chul-gyu of On The Way to the Airport conduct the entire production.
The story is propelled by a mysterious typewriter that forms a mystical relationship between a best seller writer Han Se-Joon(Yoo Ah-in) and his overly obsessive fan Jeon Seol(Lim Soo-jeong). A time travel motif from the present time to the 1930s adds spice to the storyline.
Premiered in Korea, Yoo Ah-in gained much accolade for his skillful acting of an impulsive, but purely genius writer. The narcissist character of Jin Soo-wan could have been a cliché, but Yoo creatively added his own color with his meticulous acting style and rich experience across all genres.
From 13 years of acting hiatus, Lim Soo-jeong, the star of I’m Sorry, I Love You, made a huge comeback by successfully playing a lovely, but relentless female protagonist. The two actor’s colorful, and meticulous acting complemented the otherwise complex time travel motif and allowed the audience to focus all throughout the show.
The screen play also well reflected the rich writing style of Jin Soo-wan. In tandem with Jin’s first hit drama Moon Embracing the Sun, his insights in Korean history and wit lines were well molded and presented in the plot. In addition, the antique ambience and mysterious theme developed by Kim Chul-gyu created enough tension to trigger the audience’s curiosity on what is next to come.
