Cannes- New global Internet TV network Babelgum screened previously unseen footage from Spike Lee at its MIPTV reception Tuesday April 17 2007. Lee hosted the launch event along with Babelgum co-founders Silvio Scaglia and Erik Lumer. Following a preview of the Lee footage, the full production becomes available on Babelgum for a period of three months. The platform uses peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming technology that enables high resolution and immersive television to be transmitted worldwide. The name comes from Babel representing a diversity of cultures and people, sticking together with gum, explained Babelgum co-founder and Chairman Silvio Scaglia. All material is streamed in an encrypted form that is not available for download. Scaglia envisages a targeted ‘push VOD’ model, whereby the site learns from consumption patterns and tailors offerings toward individual users. It is hoped revenues from user-specific advertising will eventually follow.
