Seoul- Korea’s animation industry is currently the third largest behind the U.S. and Japan with most of the revenue generated from OEM (original equipment manufacturer), as opposed to original content, according to the Korea Culture and Content Agency (KOCCA). While Korea has been an outsourcing destination for American, European and Japanese animation companies, KOCCA believes that is changing as original Korean works are on the rise. Korea’s break-out animation action series Eon Kid (formerly titled Iron Kid) has been shown in Korea and Spain and is slated to be broadcast on Kids WB in the U.S. this autumn. Originally developed by Designstorm, Eon Kid, a robot martial arts action series, is co-produced by Daewon Media, Spain’s BRB International and the U.S.’s Manga Entertainment. The series was selected as KOCCA’s Star Project in 2004, the government’s largest subsidy. Designstorm also unveiled animation projects Roy vs Roy Jr. and Kung Fu Island, the latter having won KOCCA’s Excellent Pilot Project Award in 2006. Designstorm’s CEO and executive producer of Eon Kid, Jungsook Sohn, believes Eon Kid’s launch in the U.S. bodes well for the company’s toy and licensing business
