Ever since market leader Star Plus announced the third edition of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), the Indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, there has been a shake-up in the Hindi general entertainment genre. The return of KBC in late January, with a new anchor in Hindi movie superstar Shah Rukh Khan, resulted in the removal of a bunch of familyoriented drama serials from the 9-10pm Monday-Thursday slot. While Star Plus is seeking to revive its magic, distancing itself from the nearest competitor Zee TV, news broadcaster NDTV confirmed plans to launch an entertainment channel. The return of KBC coincided with the departures of Peter Mukerjea and Sameer Nair, the executives credited with much of Star Plus’ success in recent years. Their decision to move on may have been related to a drop in revenues of flagship channel Star Plus. So how has Star Plus fared post KBC? And what’s been the initial impact on the genre of the introduction of condition access system in New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata this year?
