New York / London / Singapore / Hong Kong- The average Chinese youth has 37 online friends he/she has never met, Indian youths are likely to regard mobile phones as a status symbol, while one in three UK and US teenagers claim they can’t live without their game console. Globally, youths on the average have 94 numbers in the mobile, 78 contacts on a messenger buddy list and 86 people in a social networking community. 59% of 8 – 14 year olds prefer TV to PCs, 20% of youths aged 14 – 24 admit to being interested in technology and are good at multi-tasking and filtering information. These are among the findings of the Circuits of Cool/Digital Playground lifestyle study, the largest-ever global study on how the young interact with digital technology undertaken by MTV and Nickelodeon in association with Microsoft Digital Advertising Solutions. The study challenges traditional assumptions about the younger generation’s relationships with digital technology and examines the impact of culture, age and gender on technology use.
