Tokyo – NBC Universal (NBCU) will continue its expansion by acquiring Jupiter Telecommunications’ subsidiary JSBC2 and launching Sci Fi channel on J:COM. The deal is expected to close in April 2008, terms of the transaction have not been disclosed. Under the agreement, NBCU will acquire 100% of the equity of JSBC2, which holds the broadcasting license for Reality TV on SkyperfecTV in Japan. In addition NBCU’s Global Networks division will launch Sci Fi Channel in Japan in Spring 2008. Sci Fi is currently the fourth ranked entertainment network in the US cable market and is aired across 30 countries worldwide. Global Networks, led by Roma Khanna, President of Global Networks & Digital Initiatives, plans to “significantly” boost revenues of its international cable channels, including Sci Fi, 13th Street, Studio Universal and Universal Channel brands, over the next 2 – 3 years. Roma Khanna said, “We are delighted to announce launch plans for our first NBCU Global Networks’ channel brand in Japan, which is one of our priority markets for international expansion.”
