China Central Television (CCTV), EuroNews and the European Commission signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Mandarin-language broadcast of Futuris, a magazine on science, space activities and technology co-produced by EuroNews and European Commission DG Research and Information Society. The agreement is the first step in a long term partnership between EuroNews and CCTV. Under the agreement inked in Beijing on Nov 14, EuroNews will provide a package of 9 programs a month which include Space, a co-production with the European Space Agency; as well as Fly, a co-production with Eurocontrol, the European organization for air navigation safety and Hi-Tech. EuroNews and its joint copyright holders will provide CCTV with the magazines and allow them to be translated into Mandarin for broadcast in full or extracts in 2008 on CCTV 1, the first Chinese channel focusing on news and magazines, as well as CCTV Chinese and international web sites. With 16 TV channels, the Chinese pubcaster’s nightly news reaches more than 500 million viewers. It is also the country’s largest producer of TV programs, with its main output in educational and science programming. This initiative coincides with the European Union-China Science & Technology Year, and the reinforcement of EU-China scientific cooperation in 7th Framework Programme for Research (FP7).
