Brighton, UK – The BBC Showcase 2008 event taking place at the Brighton Centre in the UK from February 24 – 27, 2008, saw British period dramas snapped up. The new adaptation of Oliver Twist was sold to seven broadcasters from markets including India, United Arab Emirates and Canada. Writer Andrew Davies’ 2007 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility was also picked up by 11 international broadcasters from countries including Japan and Sweden, along with Miss Austen Regrets which was sold to Korea, Poland, Canada and Holland. Cranford was sold to seven broadcasters in seven markets including Iceland, USA and Cyprus. Also available at the event were contemporary dramas including Mistresses, Ashes to Ashes, Primeval Series1 and 2, The Fixer and Messiah: The Rapture. The annual BBC Showcase event sees BBC Worldwide generate programme sales and broker international funding deals for co-productions on behalf of BBC and independent producers. A highlight for the 2008 event were ‘digibooths’ which offer a customized VOD service to 550 potential buyers in attendance to provide instant feedback on programming. Also announced are the commissioning of a second series of Lark Rise to Candleford and new productions of Dickens’ Little Dorrit and classic Tess of the D’Urbervilles set for 2009.
