Tokyo – Japan’s digital TV penetration is surprisingly low with only three years to go till the analogue switch-off. While 43.3% of TV households are digital-ready, only 34.8% can actually watch digital broadcasts. Data comes from Japan’s National Association of Commercial Broadcasts, which conducted a survey of 18,000 households. Penetration is understandably linked to income; of those households bringing in 10 million yen (US$93,000) per annum, 61% had a digital TV. Only 24% of households within the $18,500 per annum wage bracket had digital TV.
