Vientiane, Lao PDR – Lao Telecommunications Co Ltd (Lao Telecom), the largest telecommunication operator in Laos, announced the official launch of the first 3G mobile system on October 17 in Vientiane. The launching ceremony was presided over by H.E. lieutenant general Douangchay Phichit, deputy prime minister & minister of defense, in charge post and telecommunications and president, LANIC. LTC’s 3G mobile system provides voice call; video call; internet; multimedia download/JAVA game; MMS/SMS; and TV/Radio streaming. During the first phase, Lao Telecom will provide 3G mobile service covering Vientiane and will expand its 3G service to provincial areas in 2009. Presently, Lao Telecom provides EDGE and GPRS services nationwide. Lao Telecom is targeting 3G subscribers to reach 30,000 by the end of 2008 and is anticipating to reach the subscriber base of 100,000 in 2009.
