Nonthaburi, Thailand – THAICOM Public Company Limited, Asia’s leading commercial satellite operator and the operator of the IPSTAR satellite broadband system, disclosed that its subsidiary, IPSTAR Company Limited (Japan Branch) has received all necessary licenses by the Japanese Regulatory to operate the IPSTAR gateway and to provide the IPSTAR service in Japan. These licenses will enable IPSTAR to start services from 1 April 2009, onwards. The construction of the IPSTAR Japanese gateway has been completed and is located in the Saitama Prefecture, approximately 60 km from downtown Tokyo. In addition, IPSTAR Company Limited will be responsible for IPSTAR gateway operations and provide the IPSTAR service for Japan. IPSTAR plans to provide services to support the Universal Service Obligation (USO) program targeting the un-served and underserved rural areas of Japan for broadband internet access. Dumrong Kasemset, executive chairman of THAICOM Public Company Limited and CEO of IPSTAR Company Limited (Japan Branch) said, “We are delighted to be granted all necessary licenses from the Japanese Regulatory in order to operate the IPSTAR Japan gateway and provide services. There are approximately 800,000 households in Japan without broadband access, of which we are targeting approximately 200,000 IPSTAR users throughout the coming years. IPSTAR will provide end-users packages starting at around US$30 per month, and the services will commence on April 1.”
