MIPTV, Cannes – Scripps Networks International is actively seeking opportunities for its channel brands, which include Food Network and Home and Garden Television (HGTV), in the region. Mid-December 2008 saw Greg Moyer assume the newly created position of president, Scripps Networks International, effective January 5, 2009. At MIPTV, Moyer described the Networks’ entry strategy as “flexible” targeting affiliate revenues, although not ruling out an ad-supported model on satellite free-to-air. “The bulk of our deals will be joint ventures,” said Moyer, “assuming that we will partner with existing players on the ground – like a confederation of content. We envisage a degree of centralization with windows of localization.” He said they are looking at not only pan-regional play but at “some countries that merit a deep dive.” Moyer says this strategy is partly to tap into existing infrastructure, as well as meet the levels of localization needed in the lifestyle (food and shelter) space. He said that while the Network will be looking to launch its existing channel brand names, “it would not be a dealbreaker” if a potential partner wanted flexibility over the name. Asked about rumours linking Scripps with the Asian Food Channel and Malaysia-based LI TV, Moyer smiled and said that the Network is in discussion with a number of potential partners and would not rule out those possibilities. Scripps Networks President John Lansing had previously said, “The rise of Asia and other emerging economies offers remarkable opportunities to create culturally relevant lifestyle networks in many places around the world… We have a window of opportunity driven not only by this media expansion, but also by the millions of people who are rising out of poverty into the middle class every year.” Scripps Networks owns and operates HGTV, Food Network, DIY Network and Fine Living Network as well as country music network Great American Country – and has syndicated its branded programming to more than 170 countries and on every continent around the globe. Moyer joins Scripps Networks from Rainbow Media Holdings, the programming arm of Cablevision Systems Corp., where he was general manager of VOOM HD Networks. Outside the U.S., VOOM Global Network reached 36 countries and served over 32 million subscribers. Before joining Rainbow Media, initially as president of regional programming, Moyer was president, chief editorial and creative officer at Discovery Communications, Inc.
