Australia – Graeme Samuel, chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has said the Australian broadband network will help in the convergence between media and communications, reports ITNews. He referred to the Australian government’s recent decision to build a high-speed broadband network covering 90 percent of homes, schools and workplaces over the next eight years. Samuel noted that Australia must ensure it never again saw a network operator owning enough exclusive rights to content, affecting effective competition. “Concerns could arise if a telecommunications network operator is able to acquire sufficient compelling content on an exclusive basis, such that it limits alternative network owners’ ability to offer attractive packages to consumers,” he said.
