Seoul – KT Corp. announced that it will co-build a pan-Asia undersea cable system with major Asian telecommunications companies to meet increasing demand for communications and internet services in the region. To that end, KT has signed a memorandum of understanding for the ‘Asia-Pacific Gateway project’ with its Asian counterparts, including China Telecom, China Unicom and Japan’s NTT Communications, said the company in a statement. The proposed Asia-Pacific Gateway will span 8,000 km from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Taiwan, China, Japan to South Korea, and be ready for service in 2011, according to the statement. Separately, KT has opened offices in Rwanda and Algeria to manage projects to build communications networks in those countries, said company officials. The company won a 49 billion won contract in Rwanda last October to build a fiber optics backbone network and a government data network in 30 cities and five border areas, and also an operations center to manage the nationwide network.
