Endemol Shine Group announced that The Island will be launching in Germany for the first time.
Produced by Endemol Shine Germany, the series will be filmed this summer and air on ProSieben in 2015. Originally produced in the UK by Shine TV and Bear Grylls Ventures for Channel 4, Germany is the fourth territory to pick up The Island, which has already successfully aired in France and the U.S.
In the UK, the second series of The Island doubled Channel 4’s primetime average; hitting a peak audience of 3.6 million (14.4% share). Having recently ordered a third run, Channel 4 received a record number of applicants with 135,000 people looking to take part.
In France M6 just signed a deal to bring a second series to their screens, having performed strongly across key demographics and attracting up to 3 million (12.9% share).
Meanwhile in the U.S, a first series has just completed its six episode run on NBC with a peak audience of 3.6 million.
“The Island is an incredible survival format which truly pushes participants to their very limits,” said Lisa Perrin, Managing Director of Creative Networks at Endemol Shine Group. “We have already seen viewers in the UK, France and the U.S captivated as they follow the journey of the deserted men and women enduring life on the remote island. We have no doubt that the audience in Germany will be gripped.”
The Island sets up the ultimate survival experiment to discover whether modern humans are tough and resourceful enough to survive. Participants are abandoned on a remote, uninhabited pacific island for a month. They are completely alone with only the clothes they arrive in and some basic tools. Stranded, they must use their practical skills to survive, battling exhaustion, dehydration and crippling hunger – all whilst being filmed by the embedded crew who were facing the same extreme challenge. Will they be able to rediscover the skills of their fore bearers and find the hunter-gatherer within?
